This course takes advantage of our beautiful river in Saskatoon. On land portions will be conducted at Gabriel Dumont Park (very handy for Saskatoon Canoe Club members being just a short paddle from the boathouse). For our paddling portions we will be on (and in) the South Saskatchewan River. During a warm part of the day we will find an area near some of the sandbars to practice our assisted rescues.
** In case of bad weather (storms, high winds, lightning) making paddling unsafe, we will delay the course or a portion of the course. If we are able to, we will continue the course into the evening. If we must, we will re-convene another day to finish. Please plan some flexibility into your schedule to allow for weather delays.
In the Basic Kayak Skills course we will provide you with the skills and knowledge you need to begin kayaking and set the foundation for many years of efficient, healthy, and safe paddling.
The description below is adapted from the Paddle Canada website.
Basic Kayak Skills introduces the novice to paddling a kayak in calm sheltered water (such as sheltered portions of prairie lakes).
Rescue techniques at this level incorporate the use of a paddling partner and it is essential for all Introduction to Kayaking certified paddlers to travel on the water with others who have been trained in the techniques of assisted rescues.
8 hours minimum.
1 instructor: 6 participants.
Enclosed and sheltered with easy landing options immediately present.
This course can be conducted in a pool.
Wind calm (< 15km/hr); Water calm to rippled.
Activities focus on individual safety and comfortable paddling along a calm shoreline. While there is a great deal to learn at this level, the activities should concentrate on personal progress and an awareness of the need for future learning. Paddlers should leave the course encouraged to continue their learning and aware of their individual limitations.
Lifting and carrying a kayak.
Cancellation within 7 days of the course start will forfeit your course fees & kayak fee; please let me know ASAP if you are unable to attend.
If you need to borrow a kayak for the course, please book it through the registration system when booking your course.
A 12% discount is available to Saskatoon Canoe Club members (use the current boathouse door code). To receive your discount, enter the code during registration. Since this class is taking place near the boathouse, current SCC members who have paid their fees and had their orientation will be able to access SCC kayaks for this course.

Gabriel Dumont Park is off of Saskatchewan Crescent West which can be reached at the west end of 8th St. or Taylor St. There is a parking lot here and a washroom facility, as well as a nice sandy beach area for easy launching and landing. Depending on the lesson and the weather, I may have a tarp set up near one of the picnic sites.
