This course starts in the pool at Harry Bailey Aquatic Centre where we focus on how to fall out of and get back into our kayaks (recoveries), then continues at Pike Lake where we cover the remainder of the course material.
In the Basic Kayak Skills course we will provide you with the skills and knowledge you need to begin kayaking and set the foundation for many years of efficient, healthy, and safe paddling.
The description below is adapted from the Paddle Canada website.
Basic Kayak Skills introduces the novice to paddling a kayak in calm sheltered water (such as sheltered portions of prairie lakes).
Recovery techniques at this level incorporate the use of a paddling partner and it is essential for all Basic Kayak Skills certified paddlers to travel on the water with others who have been trained in the techniques of assisted rescues.
None.
8 hours minimum.
1 instructor: 6 participants.
Wind calm ( < 15km/hr); Water calm to rippled.
Activities focus on individual safety and comfortable paddling along a calm shoreline. While there is a great deal to learn at this level, the activities should concentrate on personal progress and an awareness of the need for future learning. Paddlers should leave the course encouraged to continue their learning and aware of their individual limitations.

Our lessons at Pike Lake occur at the Cabin Owner's Beach (Hoyte's Beach) near the tennis courts and the Girl Guide camp. There is a park gate just north of where we meet, but it is locked during the summer months so you will need to arrive via the main gate. There is a basic outhouse here but no other amenities. A tarp will be set up if rain threatens.
Harry Bailey Aquatic Centre (HBAC) pool is located just off of Idylwyld Drive in Saskatoon near Saskatchewan Polytechnic (1110 Idylwyld Drive North). Sometimes they don't allow us to enter the pool area too much before our pool time so if you show up quite early they may not let you in to the change rooms. We usually meet on the pool deck (look for the rack of kayaks). Since we are not into the water until for a bit of time, don't shower when you come out to the pool area.
