Kayak Lessons

PC Basic Kayak Skills (June 25th)

Join us at Pike Lake a day of learing the basics of kayaking in this Paddle Canada-certified course.

  • Monday, June 25th, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. Pike Lake

** In case of bad weather (storms, high winds, lightning) making paddling unsafe, we will delay the course or a portion of the course. If we are able to, we will continue the course into the evening. If we must, we will re-convene the next day to finish. Please plan some flexibility into your schedule to allow for weather delays.

In the Basic Kayak Skills course we will provide you with the skills and knowledge you need to begin kayaking and set the foundation for many years of efficient, healthy, and safe paddling.

The description below is adapted from the Paddle Canada website.

Basic Kayak Skills introduces the novice to paddling a kayak in calm sheltered water (such as sheltered portions of prairie lakes).

Rescue techniques at this level incorporate the use of a paddling partner and it is essential for all Introduction to Kayaking certified paddlers to travel on the water with others who have been trained in the techniques of assisted rescues.

Course length

8 hours minimum.

Class ratio

1 instructor: 6 participants.

Enclosed and sheltered with easy landing options immediately present.
This course can be conducted in a pool.

Wind calm (< 15km/hr); Water calm to rippled.

Activities focus on individual safety and comfortable paddling along a calm shoreline. While there is a great deal to learn at this level, the activities should concentrate on personal progress and an awareness of the need for future learning. Paddlers should leave the course encouraged to continue their learning and aware of their individual limitations.

Venue Information - Pike Lake Provincial Park

Our lessons at Pike Lake occur at the Cabin Owner's Beach (aka North Beach or Hoyte's Beach) near the tennis courts and the Girl Guide camp. There is a park gate just north of where we meet, but it is locked during the summer months so you will need to arrive via the main gate. There is a basic outhouse here but no other amenities. A tarp will be set up if rain threatens.
