Kayak Lessons

Introductory Kayak Clinic (May 15 & 17)

Based on the Paddle Canada Basic Kayak Skills course, this is a shorter session for those that don't want to commit to a full Basic Kayak course, or aren't sure if kayaking is for them and gives students an opportunity to try out kayaking for the first time in a controlled setting.  This course offers some of the most basic concepts used in recreational flatwater kayaking but is not designed to be a comprehensive course.  You will be introduced to the basics of kayaking rescue techniques (how to get back in your kayak after a mishap), will learn how to launch a kayak, and will be introduced to kayak strokes. All required equipment is supplied.

The course is in two parts for a total of approximately 5 hours of course time.

Course Dates & Times:

  • Tuesday, May 15th, 8:30 PM - 11:00 PM at HBAC, &
  • Thursday, May 17th, 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM at Erindale Pond.

Course Content:

This is very much a skills-based clinic.  These fun 4+ hour clinics will focus on the following techniques (content will vary a bit depending on the group and as time allows):

  • Forward & Reverse Strokes
  • Maneuvering Strokes
  • Forward sweep
  • Reverse sweep
  • Draw strokes
  • Wet Exits
  • With and without spray skirts
  • Assisted Rescues
  • Swimming with a swamped kayak

Pre-requisites:

None. This course would be suitable for kids 12 or older, but note the late time of the pool session.

Class Size:

Maximum of 6 participants (class will be cancelled if there are not at least 3 people registered one week before the course start).

A 10% discount is available to Classic Outdoors Adventure Club members (contact the COAC for the code) and Saskatoon Canoe Club members (use the current boathouse door code).

Venue Information - Harry Bailey Aquatic Centre + Erindale Pond

Harry Bailey Aquatic Centre (HBAC) is located just off of Idylwyld Drive in Saskatoon near Saskatchewan Polytechnic (1110 Idylwyld Drive North). Sometimes they don't allow us to enter the pool area too much before our pool time so if you show up quite early they may not let you in to the change rooms. We usually meet on the pool deck (look for the rack of kayaks). Since we are not into the water until for a bit of time, don't shower when you come out to the pool area.

Erindale Pond is located in John Avant Park near the interseection of Kenderdine Rd and Kerr Road. We usually start at the NE end, along Kenderdine Rd. but it may depend on wind and other users at the park. There are no washrooms or other facilities at this location so please plan accordingly.

Sorry, we are no longer accepting registration for this event
