Kayak Lessons

Bracing & Rescue Clinic

13 860x300 Pool4Work the rust out of your kayak bracing and rescue skills in the comfort of the pool. We'll start by working on our bracing skills since the best rescue is the one that's prevented. From there we will practice a variety of ways to get yourself and your paddling partners back into your kayaks after a mishap. The warm pool is a great place to practice!

This course would be a great pre-cursor to the upcoming rolling clinics we will be offering.

The exact techniques that we practice will be tailored to the group, but here's some examples of what we can work on:

  • Bracing -
    • Low Brace
    • High Brace
    • Bracing Turns
    • Balance Brace (good step toward learning to roll)
  • Assisted Rescues -
    • T-Rescue
    • Bow Rescue
  • Self Rescues -
    • Paddle Float Rescue
    • Scramble Rescue

Prerequisites: Participants should be familiar with a wet exit and ready to embrace that skill, but you need not be 100% comfortable with the wet exit. In fact, if you are not quite comfortable being upside down in a kayak, then this is a great place to work on that in warm, clear water with an instructor standing close by.

This course is a Paddle Canada Level 1 Sea Kayak Skills clinic.

A 10% discount is available to Classic Outdoors Adventure Club members (contact the COAC for the code) and Saskatoon Canoe Club members (use the 2017 boathouse door code).

Venue Information - Harry Bailey Aquatic Centre

Harry Bailey Aquatic Centre (HBAC) is located just off of Idylwyld Drive in Saskatoon near Saskatchewan Polytechnic (1110 Idylwyld Drive North). Sometimes they don't allow us to enter the pool area too much before our pool time so if you show up quite early they may not let you in to the change rooms. We usually meet on the pool deck (look for the rack of kayaks). Since we are not into the water until for a bit of time, don't shower when you come out to the pool area.

Sorry, we are no longer accepting registration for this event
