First Aid for Paddlers

First Aid for Paddlers

We will spend the day along the river at Meewasin Park learning some essential first aid skills that any paddler should have when they head out. This course is being taught by Rebecca Basset of Back40 Wilderness First Aid (https://www.facebook.com/back40training).

Paddlers often find themselves in remote and inaccessible areas. In the event of an injury or illness while on a paddling trip, we should be prepared with both supplies and strategies to manage a variety of issues ranging from minor to severe; sometimes for an extended period of time. In recognition of some of the more probable illnesses or injuries that paddlers might be faced with, Back40 has designed this Introductory WRFA Course for paddlers specifically.

This introductory course will cover basic strategies to respond to:

  • Choking, Drownings and Basic CPR Skills
  • Sudden Medical Illnesses such as Allergies, Heart Attacks and Fainting
  • Environmental Exposure to Heat & Cold
  • Basic Wound Bandaging Skills
  • Simple Fracture Splinting Skills
  • Suggestions on First Aid Equipment for Paddlers

This session will not provide certification in any level of First Aid.

Participants should expect to be in the session from 9am-4pm and should plan to bring:

  • Snacks, lunch & water
  • Personal Day Pack - essential items for a day outside, similar to what you would have on a paddle for a short day trip
  • Personal First Aid Kit (Bring one that you may already have or take with you on paddling trips - we will use these as a point of discussion.  If you do not have one please do not purchase one just for this class.)
  • Clothing for varying weather for the day

If you have any questions about any of the above, please email Bryan at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Note:  This session will be held outdoors (weather permitting).  A public washroom will be available.  Participants do not need to bring their boats/equipment.
